Boomboxes (Jan 11) : At the 2011 Hip-hop Block Party, I saw 3 of the 4 elements of Hip-Hop on display - Graffiti, DJs, BBoys. I'm pretty sure that the fourth (MC's) were on later but I had to step. In any case, among other things they had some old boomboxes on display.

Although they when by many names: "Radio" (LL couldn't live without his), Boombox, Ghettoblaster, etc. these were unmistakable mark of hip hop in the late-80's/early-90's.

My Boombox memories:
* Auto-reverse meant that you could go non-stop for longer
* When your batteries drained, it led to the public humiliation of your tape deck slowing down the track and ruining the moment
* If you had an EQ, it was mandatory that you jack up the base - even if that made the woofer make that paper-bag sounding thump
* Although it's not in the pictures, if you had a record button it had to be in a different color than the other buttons
* Being from the Tri-state, you had to listen to 98.7FM's DJ Red Alert or maybe 107.5 if the track on 98.7 was weak. Kids... don't be fooled 97.1 is the "birthplace of hip-hop" the same way Columbus "discovered" America

Enjoy the memories.... Comment if you have some other memories you want share...

SmartBar - DJ QBert (Aug 09) : Thanks to BBoy Check-it for adding me to the guest list for a late night at SmartBar. In addition to the BBoy battle, the legendary Richard Quitevis (AKA "DJ QBert"), from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz was on the turntables after the competition.

Here are a few shots from the "clinic" he put on...
