B-Boys Galleries

Remember the Name 3 (Nov 12) : OK, so it took me a while to get these up, but they're finally ready.

Once again, Roldare Nation put on a jam that is quickly becoming the best of the best. The East Coast BBoys came to test the Chicago/Midwest BBoys and put on a great show. Props for bringing in Ben Conde, who is a yo-yo artist like you have never seen. Peep him on YouTube.

Here are my favorite pix of the night. Note that my son, KBevJr grabbed a camera and shot alongside me. For an 11 year old, he crushed. I watermarked his shots separate from mine. You gotta give credit where it's due.

If you like these, please share them. They are unlocked if you want to grab some.

Remember the Name 3 (Nov 12)

Hellaween 6 (Oct 12) : Hellaween is almost always the best battle of the year. Hexstar brings in great talent from far and wide to compete. Although the Freak Show didn't make the trip this year, plenty of other great artists did.

Here are my favorite photos from the night. I didn't stay for the finals. Too much ignorance to stick around to see what was next. I didn't bother captioning them either. In fact, I'm not even going to lock 'em down. Grab what you want. You can get the link to the full set of unedited pix on the FB page.

Hex said this was going to be the last Hellaween. Too bad. It was a strong six years.

Hellaween 6 (Oct 12)

Power in Numbers 3 (Aug 12) : Connect Force offered up the most prize money it has ever offered. Despite a few extended gaps in the battle, a lot of great crews brought their best in pursuit of the loot. In the end, Evol, Mijo, Man o' God and Airsick came out as the victors over a crew equally full of Midwest All-stars... Alternatives also hosted a simultaneous reception so that people could learn more about the great work it is doing in uptown.

Here are my favorite photos from the night. There are events roughly every other month, you shoudl try to make one if you haven't been to one!

Enjoy.

Power in Numbers 3 (Aug 12)

InkFestLive BBoys in B&W (May 12) : For a $1000 prize, you can get the top BBoys in the city (minus a few) to come out for a 2v2 Battle in Iowa. Ok, it wasn't quite Iowa, but Villa Park isn't that close to the city. In any case, there aren't many places you can see Mijo & Evol, Blakatak & JFunky, JBoogie & P-Nut, Moks & Phu, and more all going at it for the big prize. The only bad part was that more people didn't come out to see it.

it is worth noting that the DJ (whose name I need) was sick. He knew hip hop and had the set live the whole time. if you know who it was, hit me up. Thanks.

I'm not going to lock this down, so feel free to grab your pix. I didn't get too creative this time, but I think B&W made them look better. Email me if you want the unedited pix...

InkFestLive BBoys in B&W (May 12)

WBEZ Block Party BBoy Final (Jan 12) : The WBEZ Block Party featured all the elements of Hip Hop (BBoys, Graf, DJ, and MC), but the main event was the 3v3 battle finale. I rolled with my son, KBevJr, to the finals. Thanks to Shon Roka for getting us access to do what we do from a great vantage point. The Brickheadz won the evening with round after impressive round of power. Judging from the pics we captured, it was the Ike Fantastik show all night... Congrats to Ike, T2 and Evol for a great battle. KBev Jr is a big Evol fan, so it was nice of the guys to say hello afterwards.

Because he got the best shots of the night, KBevJr gets his own watermark. Word.

Enjoy the pix.

WBEZ Block Party BBoy Final (Jan 12)

Battle Ranks (Nov 11) : The BGirls and BBoys made it out for a chance to demonstrate skills for the judges. Although the crowd was light, the battle was great. Alternatives knows how to host a jam. Here are a few shots from the night. The link to the full gallery is on the FB page.

The format was a BBoys and BGirls elimination. After the prelims, you collected Patches as you won rounds. In the end, the winner had all the patches. OK, so nobody really understood the patch concept, but in the end, it was a great battle anyway...

Battle Ranks (Nov 11)

Remember the Name 2 (Nov 11) : Roldare Nation threw a jam that showcased the depth of talent in the Midwest. The format was crazy and led to some great battles. X-Man (Self X) got out strong, and despite being winded after so many rounds, had a nice outing. Props.

The Battle of the night was staged between Blakatak, Evol, Gorilla, Kind Spade, Gabestar, T2, and others. First BBoy to accumulate 7 wins took home the prize. Needless to say, Evol and Blakatak went at it and put on one of the best battles I've seen all year. In the end, Blakatak had too many power moves, too much stamina, and some new stuff I hadn't seen before. Evol came out strong and stayed strong with a highlight-reel-worthy display. Congrats to CJ on a great night.

The Chicago vs. Minneapolis battle featured a 30 minuts 10v10 cypher. Both sides went hard, but Chicago came out on top. Unfortunately, the cypher was interrupted b/c the Chicago crew couldn't control itself. They treated every trick like an opportunity to pretend they were in a mosh pit. C'mon guys... The look on Roldare's face said it all.

Regardless, RTN is a great franchise. I'm already looking forward to RTN3 next year.

Remember the Name 2 (Nov 11)

Hellaween 5 (Oct 11) : Note: For the best viewing, just pop it into SlideShow, sit back, and relax

Hexstar brought another great Hellaween battle to Chicago this year. The Freak Show came and did what they did. Although they didn't have enough to win a tough battle (they exited earlier than they deserved), Mijo and his crew got a well-deserved victory (and $1500). In the 1v1 battle, Freakazoid (TFS) beat Gravity in a ridiculous final. All 8 BBoys in that tournament were unreal. Props to Waka, who had his baby girl with him. He drew first and went after one of the toughest competitors in the venue - Gravity. It went to a tie-breaker and Waka was eliminated. That said, it was a classy move, going after one of the favorites, and passing over weaker competition.

I took a ton of shots and have the others on my Facebook site. Go there for the "full, unedited" gallery.

Peace.

Hellaween 5 (Oct 11)

Nervous Breakdown (Aug 11) : Chicago Slam Ping Pong Club was the scene for Hexstar's Pre-Hellaween jam. Suffice to say the talent was very strong all around. The only downside is that some folks has a "pass" in the first round and some battles that could have been closer to the final rounds ended the night early from some really talented BBoys. Special shout out to M-Rock who made his debut at this event. He's in Middle School and will be monster when he's old. Even more special should out to his Dad who was there to support his son.

Anti-shout out to BBoy Rat who busted the cipher by sprinting across the floor and causing quite a ruckus. BBoy Rat was well fed. That's not up for debate.

Anyway, this time the pics are free to download. Don't forget, the full set of ALL the photos is linked from teh FB page (click the icon above). If you were competing, I probably have a photo of you in there. Enjoy...

Nervous Breakdown (Aug 11)

Connect Force Summer Jam (Aug 11) : Connect Force closed out the summer with a nice 2v2 battle. Lots of talent in the building. In the end, GSK took home the cash. Congrats to Moke for his 2nd victory in as many weeks.

End of summer pricing on the photos... hahaha... FREE. Go to the FB page (above) for the full set of unedited pix. If you were there, you're probably there. 8-)

MC's - Your pix are at the end

Connect Force Summer Jam (Aug 11)

RedBull BC One - CHI (Jul 11) : The Red Bull BC One is one of the broadest global competitions out there (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Bull_BC_One). This year, one the the paths to the finals in Russia came through Chicago and the team at @RedBullCHI was kind enough to give me access to get some great shots. I've been to a lot of battles, but none with a sound system and stage/lighting setup like this one. 16 BBoys from around North America competed in a single elimination tournament to crown the winner.

The lineup was: ATN (Las Vegas), El Nino (Boston), Evol (Chicago), Frankie (NYC), Gravity (NYC), Kareem (LA), Keebz (Orlando), Kid Glyde (NYC), Mijo (Milwaukee), MN Joe (Minneapolis), Morris (Sacramento), Nasty Ray (San Jose), Palmer (Houston), Puzzles (Toronto), Toyz aRe Us (Washington), and Vicious Vic (Orlando).

The first round got off to a crazy start when (after dissing Vicious Vic) someone let Gravity off the leash and he exploded on to the stage with a sick entry and proceeded to defy Gravity. Unfortunately, VIcious Vic was game and got the victory with some tricks of his own. This was one of two major disappointments on the night - it would have been great to see Gravity go a few more rounds. BBoy Evol from the hometown Brickheadz Crew tried to do "enough" to get to round 2, but the judges gave the 1st round win to ATN - despite was was slow and somewhat sloppy groundwork. It was probably a tough lesson for Evol to learn about treating every round like it was your last. In the end, ATN went for it in both rounds and that probably put him over the top. He was outmatched in Round 2 despite putting on a much better show that he did in Round 1. The other highlight for me was Toyz aRe Us (follow him at @toyzareus) from MD. He had the kind of well-rounded arsenal that you don't see too often, but want to see again and again.

The winner on the night was El Nino (http://www.bboyelnino.com/index.html) - he had too many tricks and too much charisma in the ring to be overcome. His final two rounds (through Vicious Vic and Toyz) were insane. A 3-way battle between those guys would pack any house. Congrats to El Nino on a great win.

After the battle ended, some of us stuck around in Roldare's cipher on the stage to shoot a few more pics. I included those towards to end. If you competed and want your pics, email me. If you want to see the full gallery of 300 unedited pix, find the link on the facebook page. If you want to see more of what I do, follow me on Twitter.

*** For best viewing, change the style to Journal or Slideshow...

Peace.

RedBull BC One - CHI (Jul 11)

Power in Numbers (Jun 11) : Power in Numbers - a crew vs. crew battle. Good times at Alternatives on a Sunday evening. Despite only 6 crews entering for the $500 prize, it was a good day of battling that ending up with the Brickheadz getting paid. In my opinion:

* Waka's return to the Brickheadz after a tough injury have his crew working on another level. Shorty Brick (as you can tell from the photos) was nuts
* Rolare's shorty crew drew the Brickheadz in the opening round. Great battle. Unlucky draw 8-)
* The Bum Rush in the finals was classic, it was the probably the one time the Brickheadz had to come from behind all day
* Mike Spex has a great CD our there. If you don't have it, you need it. Give him a shout out on Facebook.

Enjoy the pix. The unedited gallery's link is on the FB page.

Power in Numbers (Jun 11)

Who's the Master (Apr 11) : Despite a small crowd, Connect Force held it down with another nice format for a BBoy event. This time, it was a skill competition, "Who's the Master". Nice work everyone.

Full gallery link is on the Facebook Page...

Who's the Master (Apr 11)

Mile High Club (Apr 11) : Adverse and Crooks threw a great jam on a rainy afternoon. The Mile High Club brought out the best BBoys and BGirls in the area. In the end, Small-Medium-Large (Flexum, Dizzy, and Crumbles) were too much to overcome. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day. The rest of the unedited photos can be found on the FB page (link above).

Peace

Mile High Club (Apr 11)

Who got game? (Feb 11) : Another great night at Alternatives. Why? Because a Bonnie and Clyde format means the BGirls have to come correct to get that cash. Onyx and Erin Boogie walked away with the prize. As a duo, they are just too strong. Congrats to both of them. Props to all of BGirls who put in work that night. Well done.

Here are a few shots from the night that I liked. I was rushed, so I didn't get too creative. Just some minor touchups here and there. If you want the full, unedited gallery, the link is on the Facebook page (above)

Who got game? (Feb 11)

Who got your back? (Dec 10) : Despite a small crowd at Alternatives, the lineup for "Who's Got Your Back" was full of the usual suspects, which made for a surprising fun night of tricks. The format (a randomly drawn 2v2 battle) made it interesting as rivals found themselves fighting on the same side and friends found themselves going head-to-head. For me, seeing the crazy athletics of BBoys Kes and Kweschin for the first time was a treat. They stood out among a bunch of new faces (to me).

In the end, Man o' God and JFunky were the two BBoy's left standing. However, they were both exhausted by the time they went head-to-head for the title. Man o' God took the crown for the night.

If I missed your name in the caption, please let me know and I'll add it. As always, you can download your print, or buy it without the watermark. It'll support the hobby. This ish costs time and money. Plus some of y'all need more photoshop work than others! 8-)

Happy New Year to all....

Keith

Who got your back? (Dec 10)

Kilombos (Dec 10) : On a cold winter night, I decided to go shoot at Kilombos. It was an event put on by Connect Force and the University of Hip Hop. The turnout was decent and the teens from West Lawndale HS represented. The big winner for the night was the Alchemist, who is continuing to improve his craft. Here are a few shots from the show. Props to all 6 competitors from the 1v1 Battle.

PS Don't forget to check the MC/Rapper section for the folks who rapped and shared some spoken work with us that night. Email me if you want the full, unedited gallery (200+ photos) - keith@kbevphoto.com

I didn't lock 'em down, so if you used them, please credit kbevphoto.com

Kilombos (Dec 10)

Remember the Name (Oct 10) : Roldare put together a great show at Alternatives - "Remember the Name". The show featured some of the usual suspects, but also included many young up-and-comers to the scene. Cipher battles and pride battles were on tap for the night. Here are a few of the photos that stood out from the night.

As always:
1) There is another gallery of raw photos. If you want the link, email me.

4 da Lova (July 10) : This time it was 4 Da Love, a unique format that included a "regular" 3v3 battle, a Shorty battle, and some other stuff. I'll let you read Roldare's review for more details at chicagobboy.com.

In any case, here are the photos that I liked best of the few hundred I shot. Alternatives is always a great place to shoot because of the lighting. On a related note, Black clothes are for Ninjas. If more BBoy's would wear lighter colors, it'd be easier to get better shots! 8-)

Enjoy,
Keith

4 da Lova (July 10)

Hellaween 4 (Oct 10) : Hexstar put it down again with Hellaween 4 this year. With over 150 people battling for the prize of the night, Crooks Crew won the night. Congrats to everyone for a great night.

Here are my favorites from the night. I couldn't get it any lower than 91 pictures, so you may want to view it as a slide show. I tried a few new things in photoshop. If you hate the way I edited yours, keep it to yourself. 8-)

There are 700 more in a "private" gallery. If you were there, you're probably in that gallery. You can find the link to that gallery the Facebook and Twitter pages (links above).

Until next time... Peace.

Hellaween 4 (Oct 10)

Who Wants It - Rd 3 (Jul 10) : BBoy Bein put it down again with another set of "Who Wants It?" battles. Although the crowd was relatively light on this Sunday night in Joliet, the battles were still tight. For me, it was the first time I had seen to talented BBoy's Battle: Ike Fantastic and BBoy Blank. Both bboys look like they should be playing power forward for someone's basketball team and not tearing up the floor with power moves and tricks. Props also to Joe Lethal, Berto Solo and Adverse for some great routines. Props to Blank for making the trip from Michigan and bringing some genuine love and spirit to the event. Likewise, Ike did his thing and entertained everyone there.

Here are some shots that I like from the night. As always, you can download unedited photos from the private gallery, just email me.

Peace,
Keith

City v City 6 - Chicago Day 1 (Jun 10) : Day 1 of City vs. City 6 was full of great work by BBoys from around the globe. Props to Check-it, Skywalker, Sneeks, and all the other folks who worked seemingly non-stop to keep things on schedule and positive.

Attached are my favorite photos (about 80 or so) from day one. You can email for a link to the "unedited" photos from the day or check the forums at chicagobboy.com's photo section. There are about 1,000 of them.

If you want me to add you name to the photo, please email me and let me know which one is you.

Enjoy the photos and thanks to everyone who made room for the folks who were in your grill with cameras. You can help fund the hobby by ordering your prints from here.

City v City 6 - Chicago Day 2 (Jun 10)

Party of 10 (Mar 10) : March 6, 2010 @ Alternatives BBoy Check-it hosted "Party of 10". After taking about 700 photos, I got it down to a smaller number of favorites. Thanks to everyone for your willingness to make room for "the guy with the camera".

No photoshop filters and stuff this go 'round b/c I didn't have the time (or the inspiration). The theme for this gallery was "Remove the bystanders, let the BBoys have the spotlight". Apologies to all the people in the background that I removed from these pix 8-)

As always, if you want a photo of yourself, let me know and I'll get it to you. If you have a comment, leave a comment...

Party of 10 (Mar 10)

Who Wants It - Rd 2? (Jan 10) : "Who Wants It - Round 2?" In Joliet, IL had roughly 40 crews show up to battle 2v2. You can find Roldare's review at chicagobboy.com. What you can't find there is a gallery of my favorite shots from the night. Here are 64 (!) of my favorites. Good night of battles and as usual, the crowd what chill... Thanks to BBoy Bein for a great battle.

There are about 470 "raw" photos in a private gallery. If you want to browse those to see if you're in there. Let me know.

Who Wants It - Rd 2? (Jan 10)

Hellaween III (Oct 09) : Hellaween 3 at Alternatives was a good night of 3v3 battles - even if it did start 90 minutes late for no apparent reason. The Nikon's were in attendance and had to pay $10 to get in just like I did. Go figure.

Brickheads, Chicago Tribe and others did their thing. Even the younger BBoys held their own for a few rounds. The crew I hadn't seen, that rolled deep, was the Freak Show. Although many people were in costumes, I think these BBoys "live the brand". They were ousted on a Tie-Tie-Loss vote from the judges. In boxing, that's a "majority draw" and should have gone to a tie-break. At Hellaween, it was game over...

*** Although I recognized many of the BBoys from the Smart Bar, I would still appreciate help identifying everyone.
*** If you want the link to 500 unedited photos, please email me via the INFO TAB on the menu bar. I'll post them later this week to the site....
*** Fund the hobby, buy your stuff 8-)

Until next time... peace.

Hellaween III (Oct 09)

SmartBar - B-boys (Aug 09) : Thanks to BBoy Check-it for adding me to the guest list for a late night at SmartBar. I had been looking for a BBoy competition to shoot on a night when I could go. As a bonus, the legendary Richard Quitevis (AKA "DJ QBert"), from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz was on the turntables after the competition. (DJ's gallery)

*** If you know the names of the BBoys, email me or add a comment to the photos. Thanks.

The crowd was cool except for a few knuckleheads acting out their version of a "hold me back" situation. People were not having it and it was quickly squashed. There's no fighting in hop-hop... And next time, I'll bring the SB-800 with me...

SmartBar - B-boys (Aug 09)

J Boogie's BDay (May 10) : J Boogie celebrated his 30th Bday at SubT, and I figured I'd go shoot. Although I've been there several times, I had never been to the first floor. BBoy Teck hosted an 8-man 1v1 battle. I played around with photoshop on a few just for kicks...

As always, you can support the hobby by ordering your pix. The full unedited gallery address is posted on chicagobboy.com. You can d/l those at will.

If you can help update the captions with names, please email me at keith@kbevphoto.com. Thanks and enjoy!

J Boogie's BDay (May 10)

La Rambla, BCN BBoys (Jul 11) : Although I missed a big battle by a day, I did manage to meet some BBoys (and BGirl Anita) on La Rambla in Spain. I caught a bit of their performance and talked with them for a while.

La Rambla, BCN BBoys (Jul 11)

WBEZ Block Party: BBoys (Jan 13) : Third time I made the trip to the WBEZ Block party bboy battle. I got there a little late and saw the round of 16. The rest happened at night, and I had to bounce, so this is just a small gallery of my favorite shots from that round. A link to the full gallery is on the Facebook page.

If you like these, please share them...
